Greetings all,
Two summer REU positions are available with the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State University. Students will assist with collecting and analyzing tree trait data along a climatic gradient in the eastern Cascade Mountains. We seek to explore variation among conifers in traits related to growth and drought-tolerance, as well as parameterize an earth system model that will then be used to simulate regional carbon and water dynamics under future management and climate change scenarios. Applicants are expected to assist with field and laboratory research, as well as develop an individual research project. Students will gain experience in quantifying tree and forest attributes (e.g. carbon stocks, tree height, leaf area), collecting and processing tree cores and foliage samples, and measuring aspects of plant physiology (e.g. leaf CO2 fluxes) in a range of conifer forests. Students will also gain experience in analyzing and formatting data according to national and international protocols. Students are expected to be proficient using Excel for data entry and, preferably, to have experience conducting fieldwork, camping, and using field instruments (e.g. LAI-2000). These are 10-week positions at 40 hours per week and will extend from June 16 - August 15. The positions are based in Corvallis and pay $500 per week in addition to housing and other benefits. To apply, please send CV and letter of interest to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> by May 5th, 2014.
