Toolik Lake is an Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ALTER) site in northern Alaska. To encourage educated guessing, CALON and Toolik Field Station staff has made current surface conditions of the lake available to the public via an array of wireless web cameras around the lake perimeter. These cameras capture images at three-hour intervals between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (AKDT). A chart of dates the lake became ice-free from 2000-2013 is also available online. The winner of the contest will receive a customized Toolik Field Station 2014 Ice Classic coffee mug. Deadline for entering a guess: Monday, 12 May 2014.
