Director of Environmental Stewardship

The University of the South invites applications for the position of 
Director of Environmental Stewardship. The primary functions are to 
envision, secure support for, plan, and coordinate program development and 
institutional capacity development that expands education and research on 
the greater Domain (natural lands associated with Sewanee’s 13,000 acre 
campus).  The Director is responsible for holistically and strategically 
integrating research, demonstration, and management of the greater Domain 
for the public good.

Responsibilities include; lead planning for the larger-scale thematic and 
finer-grained educational and research use of the natural areas associated 
with Sewanee’s 13,000 acre campus, which includes program development as 
well as physical and electronic infrastructure development, as needed.  
Develop relationships with research faculty at graduate institutions to 
facilitate grant-supported research utilizing Sewanee’s natural lands and in 
our region and generate collaborative opportunities for Sewanee faculty and 
students.  Develop and manage relationships with conservation and land 
management agencies in the region to support research, data sharing, and 
student internships. Serve as a primary point of contact for those at the 
University and elsewhere who wish to initiate projects on the greater 
Domain.  Coordinate, complete, and maintain databases for past, present, and 
future educational and research activities on the greater Domain.  
Facilitate, and assist in maximizing the impact of, research on the greater 
Domain by faculty and students. 
 
The ideal candidate will have expertise in conservation, ecology or related 
environmental sciences, at the level of at least a M.S. and as demonstrated 
through a record of relevant publication.  As well, expertise in the study 
of ecosystems in the southern United States and in seeking and conducting 
research partnerships with external faculty and institutions.  Additionally, 
the ideal candidate will have experience in collaborating with a variety of 
stakeholders  involved in natural resource conservation and management, 
management of protected areas for research and/or educational purposes, 
establishing and maintaining long-term databases and success in securing 
major grants and other funding.

Arts and Sciences and a distinguished School of Theology.  It is an 
institution of the Episcopal Church that welcomes individuals of all 
backgrounds. It is located on a striking, 13,000-acre campus on Tennessee's 
Cumberland Plateau.
