Position Summary:

Audubon's Conservation Science team in San Francisco, California has a paid 
internship opportunity for an individual interested in learning how to use 
network mapping software to visualize complex relationships within Audubon's 
research projects and organizational structure. The intern will work directly 
with Audubon's Quantitative Ecologist to become versed in the network mapping 
software (MAPPR), gain experience working with large datasets, and learn how to 
read and evaluate scientific literature. Depending on the results of the 
investigation, as well as the intern's level of interest, there may also be 
opportunities for publishing in the scientific literature. This internship is 
designed to provide the intern with the opportunity to interact with and learn 
from experts in the field of conservation science.
Essential Functions:

The internship will focus on specific projects of interest to the Audubon 
Conservation Science team, including creating a network map for Important Bird 
Areas (IBAs) and mapping Audubon's presence within the United States. The 
intern will develop the skills to:

    Use MAPPR (network mapping software) to analyze and map avian data and 
Audubon's network
    Collect, compile, manage and analyze data; specifically large datasets
    Prepare scientific reports, articles and/or program updates
    Identify common geographic and environmental determinants of species 
distributions and trends
    Interpret network maps

At the end of the internship the intern will:

    Have a basic understanding of avian science and conservation
    Understand how databases are used, maintained and developed for specific 
conservation projects
    Have interacted with experts in the field and the Audubon network

This part-time paid internship will run from June/July to August/September and 
will average 20 hours per week, generally between 9 am and 5 pm.
Qualifications and Experience:

    Currently working towards an undergraduate degree in biology or computer 
science, or have taken courses that focus on biology, networks, and/or computer 
science
    Interested in network science and/or informatics
    Proficiency with Excel (or similar database) and other key Microsoft Office 
products required
    Desire to learn and interest in conservation
    Strong oral and written communication skills; well organized
    Independent and able to work with little oversight
    Demonstrated experience learning/applying new software programs
