Position: Research Assistant I/II - Soil Warming

Position Summary:
The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking
applicants for two full-time, year-round Research Assistants. These
positions are funded through federally grants in support of soil
warming experiments at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts.
These experiments are part of a long-term study investigating the
effects of climate change on carbon and nitrogen cycling in a
northern temperate forest. The Research Assistants will work on two
soil warming experiments.
Additional Information:
Duties include on-site assistance in the operation and maintenance of
the soil warming experiments that use resistance cables buried in the
soil to warm soils 5oC above ambient year around. Research tasks
include: maintenance of the soil warming experiments; sampling of
trace gases, soil, and vegetation for chemical analyses; laboratory
analyses of field samples; data management and analysis;
participation in the writing of scientific papers.
Basic Qualifications:
College graduate with a Bachelor's (Research Assistant I) or Master's
(Research Assistant II) degree in Ecological science. Strong math and
statistical skills, attention to detail, experience in independent
research and coursework with laboratory and field components.
Applicant must be comfortable with electric circuitry and be able to
operate chemical analytical equipment including autoanalyzer, CHN
analyzer and gas chromatograph.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves working outdoors as part of a team in 3+ seasons.
