Description:  M.S. research assistantship for studying white-tailed deer
behavior, movements, and survival in relation to a culturally important deer
restoration project on the Qualla Boundary of North Carolina. This project
will include research collaboration between the Fisheries and Wildlife
program with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and the Forestry,
Wildlife and Fisheries program at UT-Knoxville. Study will involve capture
and relocation of deer in collaboration with state and federal biologists,
followed by telemetry to record movements and survival. Drs. Caleb Hickman
and Lisa Muller will co-advise the student and a consortium that includes
EBCI, UT-Knoxville, North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and the
Great Smoky Mountain’s National Park will provide primary logistical
support. The project will require travel between UT-Knoxville for coursework
and the Qualla Boundary near Cherokee, North Carolina for field research.
The student will work closely with EBCI staff and engage Cherokee citizens
during fieldwork and outreach opportunities.

Qualifications:  Applicant should be highly motivated, have good written and
quantitative skills, strong work ethic, field experience, organizational
skills, and the ability to work with others. Must have a B.S. in wildlife
biology or related field, minimum GPA of 3.0, and GRE scores (Q + V) of 297.
 The ideal candidate would be able to work with a diverse group of
stakeholders and be familiar with deer handling, behaviors, and telemetry.
Motivated students interested in working with us to apply for other funds
will receive higher preference.
