Hello everyone,
As you may know LANDFIRE (www.landfire.gov) has developed "reference
condition" state and transition models and associated textual descriptions for
the ecosystems of the United States. They can be a workable look at what
people refer to as Historic Range of Variability (HRV). It is clear with
climate change, altered disturbance regimes, invasives, etc. there is a time
and a place for HRV as a management goal, but that they are not always useful.
What do you think? Are there ecosystem types or situations where reference
conditions are more useful than others? Can we provide general guidance for
managers who want to use HRV within the context of resilience? I've seen
Wiens etal (2012) and other references but would like your opinion. The goal
is guidance for managers who are often not able to dig into all of the
scientific literature.

Thanks!
Randy Swaty
