I am interested in harvesting seeds from Apocynum androsaemifolium in the
western US as part of a
nation-wide seed banking effort: Project Baseline (www.baselineseedbank.org).
We have visited over
25 populations in California, Utah, and Colorado and have noticed that very few
individuals are
flowering or producing fruit. We visited the populations in June, July, and
August. I am wondering
whether anyone has any insights into the reproductive behavior of spreading
dogbane in the west. I
first thought the anomaly was in California only and attributed it to drought,
but the pattern is
repeated across multiples states. I have heard accounts that it is flowering
and fruiting at expected
rates in the Midwest and East Coast this year. I'm interested to hear any
information you can provide.
