Title:Applied Climate Change: Gaining Practical Skills for Climate Change
Adaptation
Dates: October 20 to October 31, 2014

Climate change is a global threat to human health, biodiversity and
economies. Managers of government agencies, organizations and industries are
being faced with the need to develop predictive models, strategies and
mitigation measures. As the tools in this field adapt along with the
scenarios, updated training in this area is critical. In this course,
consultants, climatologists, engineers, and biologists from industry,
conservation organizations and universities combine to provide a current
in-depth look at the theory, tools and their application to real-world
scenarios in a hands-on intensive training experience. As part of the
course, each participant will complete, and carry away, a climate change
impacts and adaptation study for their own region of geographic interest
that will include: how the climate has changed in the past; how the climate
is projected to change in the future; how these changes have/will impact the
region; and how best to adapt to these anticipated impacts. The team taught
course is led by Dr. Adam Fenech, Director of the Climate Research Unit at
the University of Prince Edward Island.

This Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation course is taught as an
intensive 2-week fulltime residential session. The course is held at the
Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s 3,200 acre facility in Front
Royal, VA, USA and will be based at a brand-new sustainably-built Academic
Center opened in October 2012. The course fee is $3478, which includes
instruction and course materials as well as all meals, lodging (shared
