You may be able to simplify the selection process somewhat by buying your
own external light source. When I was shopping for microscopes online a
couple of years ago, Amazon helpfully suggested a $10-20 Ikea task light as
an alternative to the bulky boxes that sell for several hundred dollars.
They don't have adjustable focusing rings like some light sources, but you
can move the lights around to manipulate shadows, and you can't beat the
price: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20169658/
