Gulf of Maine Research Institute Postdoctoral Research Associate
*Overview:* The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) has emerged as a catalyst for solutions to complex challenges at the nexus of Maine’s marine ecosystem and our economy. GMRI is widely respected as one of the top marine research institutions in the Northeast. Our fusion of science, education, and community gives us range to effect change from multiple directions. Our objectivity and commitment to collaboration make us the go-to organization for communities grappling with contentious political issues and new business systems. We are making a long-term investment in science literacy as the cornerstone of a 21st century economy by providing programs to ignite the curiosity, ambition, innovation, and problem-solving potential of Maine’s next generation. GMRI is seeking applicants for a 2.5 year postdoctoral position modeling the spatial-temporal distribution of marine species. The candidate will be a part of a team of ecologists, ecosystem modelers, and data scientists focused on ecological forecasting with the goal of providing near-real time information to fisheries stakeholders to support decision-making in the context of climate change. The candidate will develop models that capture spatial-temporal changes in animal distributions based on observations of marine species collected outside of standardized scientific surveys and satellite-based observations of the environment obtained from NASA’s Earth Observing System data collection. *Requirements:* Candidates must have a Ph.D. in ecology, fisheries science, oceanography, or other related field. The position requires strong mathematical, statistical, and computational skills and ideally, some experience working with satellite or other large geophysical data sets and the MaxEnt modeling framework. A candidate with experience working in the R programming environment is strongly desired. *To Apply:* Applicants should submit a letter of interest, CV, and names of three references. In the letter, please characterize your research interests and how this position aligns with them.
