Volunteer Field Assistants Needed: Study of rhesus macaques in Puerto Rico

Position Description:

Two volunteer field assistants are wanted to help with data collection on
rhesus macaque behavior and physiology in Puerto Rico. The study combines
behavioral observations of individually recognizable animals with collection of
urine samples for measuring oxidative stress and images for measuring male
facial coloration and symmetry. Volunteers will receive training on-site and
will work as part of a larger team of researchers and volunteers from the
University of Chicago and New York University. The project is based at the Cayo
Santiago field site, housing is at the nearby town of Punta Santiago, on the
south-east coast of Puerto Rico.

Qualifications/Experience:

Must be able to work in field conditions on a daily basis (5 days per week) in
the hot Caribbean sun. Physically fit, motivated, and willing to learn new
skills. Strong communication and inter-personal skills. Previous experience in
field biology research would be useful: in particular any work involving data
collection on animal behavior. Formal training in zoology, biological
anthropology and/or ecology would also be advantageous, as well as experience
with semi-professional digital photography (excluding ‘point-and-shoot’
cameras). Additionally, in order to receive permission to work on Cayo Santiago
you have to provide a number of medical test results (e.g. TB, measles,
intestinal parasites, rabies) to the Caribbean Primate Research Center (the
organization that runs this field site). At least a month is required to obtain
clearing to work on the island.

Salary/funding: No salary but partial financial support for airfare and housing
in Punta Santiago will be provided.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions: Partial financial support
for airfare and housing in Punta Santiago will be provided to successful
applicants.

Term of Appointment: Feb – Jul 2015.

Application Deadline:
We will review applications ASAP until the positions are filled.
