I am not a botanist, but have some interest, and have worked with some
botanists for decades.

Here are a few good technical references:

Long and Lakela 1971 A Flora of Tropical Florida U of Miami Press
Wunderlin1998 Guide to the Vascular Plants of Florida University Presses of
Florida
Wunderlin1982 Guide to the Vascular Plants of Central Florida University
Presses of Florida
Radford, Ahles, & Bell 1968 Manual of the vascular Flora of the Carolinas
University of North Carolina Press

Several early works of John Kunkel Small can be found on Amazon.

A checklist of North Central Florida plants is available free from the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection at this web site:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/labs/cgi-bin/sbio/keys.asp

FDEP also published a wetland plant manual that is very good, and is
available from UF or Amazon:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/wetlands/delineation/pubs.htm

You can also find a guide to ferns and a plethora of macroinvertebrate keys
on that page as well.

Good popular books include:
Bell & Taylor 1982 Florida Wild Flowers and Roadside Plants Laural Hill
Press
Nelson 1994 The Trees of Florida Pineapple Press
Nelson 1996 The Shrubs and Woody Vines of Florida Pineapple Press

Several of these are out of print, but may be had for a good price if you
shop around.

You should find a lot more choices through Google or Amazon as well.

Good luck,

Cheers,

Doug Strom
