The San Diego Zoo is looking for a new Director of Plant Programs. The person 
will direct and oversee In situ plant conservation research at the San Diego 
Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and collection based Ex situ 
conservation efforts.

The Director will be housed within the Applied Plant Ecology Division at the 
Beckman Center (http://www.sandiegozooglobal.org/icr/applied_plant_ecology/) in

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
        Oversees all plant programs
        Links collection and research-based conservation efforts across San 
Diego Zoo Global

Collection activities:
        Develops and oversees implementation of the organization’s long‑range 
botanical collection
        Plans, leads botanical collection master plan with curatorial 
horticulture staff
        Coordinates activities between the Zoo and Safari Park’s diverse 
collection issues
        Participates in developing garden priorities and design
        Consults with curatorial, horticulture, and scientific staff regarding 
collection management
        Oversees curatorial staff with importation and exportation priorities 
of collection
        Oversees the collection inventory and record keeping, and develops a 
unified plant record system

Conservation research activities:
        Oversees the Institute’s plant conservation efforts and guides future 
research priorities
        Directs staff of the Applied Plant Ecology Division
        Obtains external funding to support divisional programs
        Sets strategic priorities and oversees the management of the Native 
Plant Seed Bank
        Provides botanical and habitat restoration guidance for ongoing field 
and reintroduction efforts
        Collaborates with scientific colleagues within and outside the 
organization

 Integrated activities:
        Coordinates major planning activities across Zoo, Park, and Institute 
management
        Aligns conservation research and botanical conservation collection 
efforts
        Provides cross-disciplinary team building facilitation of effective 
organizational communication
        Provides interpretation of the botanical collection and plant 
conservation efforts through various media
        Develops, administers, and monitors assigned budgets and recommends 
capital expenditures
        Identifies legal issues
        Assures compliance with professional standards and state, federal and 
international governmental regulations
        Monitors and analyzes related legislation and regulations for the
