Job Description:
1-2 Skilled Bird Banders are needed between mid-April-July (flexible) for a 
study on the contribution of native and non-native plants to urban food 
webs. This project works within the Neighborhood Nestwatch program (URL: 
http://nationalzoo.si.edu/scbi/MigratoryBirds/Research/Neighborhood_Nestwatc
h/) and combines avian ecology, entomology and citizen science to 
investigate food resources for birds in suburban backyards. Daily duties 
primarily include target and passive netting breeding and migratory birds to 
color band and collect blood, fecal and feather samples. Duties will also 
include processing blood samples for laboratory analysis, point count 
surveys, resighting color-banded birds, nest searching/monitoring, and 
assisting with insect/vegetation sampling as needed. Perks include the 
opportunity to learn a diverse array of skills and the occasional pancake 
breakfast. During the height of the breeding season, applicants should 
expect long hours and a 6-7 day/wk schedule. Visits to field sites will 
require daily commutes in busy DC traffic conditions. MD housing convenient 
to the District will be provided, and government vehicles will be used for 
work travel. Salary will be commensurate with experience. ($325-450/week).

Qualifications:
Required qualifications: 1) the ability to work independently and keep 
meticulous notes, 2) a valid driver’s license; 3) the personality to 
positively interact with the public on a spontaneous (but regular) basis, 
and 4) experience using mist nets and independently banding passerine birds. 

Preferred qualifications: Experience taking blood samples from birds, 
identifying eastern/ornamental woody plants and identifying eastern breeding 
birds by sight and sound.
