Computer Modeling Specialist Position at UFMG in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: Economic Valuation Amazon Forest Change
CSR at UFMG (csr.ufmg.br), coordinated by Prof. Britaldo Soares-Filho, is hiring a specialist in computer modeling to participate in the project entitled "ECONOMIC VALUATION OF CHANGES IN AMAZON FOREST AREA". The project financed by the World Bank aims to develop a platform for integrating geographically differentiated net forest values for the Amazon region. The platform will embed three major valuation components. One is the direct values of maintaining the forest versus converting or degrading it (opportunity costs of forest conservation). Another component comprises assessment impact modules, including forest degradation from fires and climate change, and deforestation, and the third estimates the economic losses from such impacts. The modeler will undertake the following activities: * Environmental simulation modeling * Programming using the Dinamica EGO interface * Spatial statistical analyses * Writing technical reports, scientific papers, and online documentation Basic requirements: * Basic experience in programming language * Experience in statistical analyses * Good communication and collaboration skills * Fluent in the English language * Passion for challenges Additional desirable requirements: * Environmental studies experience or interest * GIS experience * Web design background * Availability for traveling in Brazil and abroad * Conversation skills in Portuguese or Spanish Advantages: * Flexible working hours * Interaction with a world-renowned interdisciplinary team * Participation in cutting-edge projects * Multiple learning opportunities Workplace: Centro de Sensoriamento Remoto - UFMG - Belo Horizonte Duration of contract: Two years (beginning in March 2015), with possibility of renewal depending on performance.
