Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (National Park Service)
Biological Science Technician (plants)

Location: Voyageurs National Park, MN (likely at the Ash River area of the
park)  

Position Grades and Vacancies: GS-6 (one vacancy) 

Job Duration: May 18 – September 2, 2015 

Pay: $17.06/hour

Description and Duties: The incumbents will work for the Great Lakes Network
of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) program. The goals
of the I&M program include monitoring key environmental variables so that
ecological change can be detected and addressed in a timely manner. 

These are largely field based positions. The incumbents will assist with the
establishment and sampling of permanent vegetation monitoring plots at
Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The incumbent will collect
extensive data on the herbaceous layer, shrubs, and tree saplings, as well
as perform browse assessments. He/she will be expected to identify over 350
herbaceous species, and have considerable experience identifying members of
the family Poaceae and genus Carex.

Seasonal housing will most likely be available at Whispering Pines seasonal
housing area, near the Ash River Visitor Center, where the position will
start and end each day. Housing will be paid for by the incumbent.

Field work will be performed in teams of 2-3 people. The incumbents may also
spend approximately 5-10% of time performing computer work.

This position operates on an 8 day on/6 day off schedule. During the 8-day
sampling periods, incumbents will primarily travel by motor boat and
backcountry camp. They will be expected to carry field equipment weighing up
to 50 lbs. There will also be some canoeing required. He/she will be exposed
to high temperatures, stinging and biting insects including extensive
mosquitos and ticks, and poisonous plants.
