Safe and Healthy Communities is a program at US EPA, which suggests an approach to environmental management that protects human health while incorporating what is valued most about our natural resources. Within this framework, sustainability research involves advancing the field of resilience science by exploring the interdependence of human and natural systems to inform community planning. Our research integrates ecological and social perspectives to devise management approaches to address environmental change. The project will assess resilience in social- ecological systems. National Risk Management Research Laboratory?s Sustainable Technology Division uses a multidisciplinary approach, which employs ecologists, economists, engineers, environmental scientists, physical and social scientists, to address sustainability issues in regional environmental management. Together with other team members, the Associate will produce studies on ecological and social indicators of resilience for environmental management and sustainability. The Associate is expected to conduct quantitative and qualitative research on resilience and create peer-reviewed publications.
