Post-doctoral Research Associate – Spatial Ecologist

Job Description:
The Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the School of 
Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska invites applicants for a 
post-doctoral research associate to study wildlife distribution and 
demographics. The primary objective of the project is to develop species
distribution models for a suite of grassland dependent species and identify 
the potential consequences of land-use change through scenario planning. 
Analysis will include previously collected land-cover and animal  
distribution data, as well as new field data collected during the study.

This position is a three year, $40,000-$60,000/year (DOE), full-time, grant-
funded position with benefits. Review of applications will begin immediately 
and continue until a successful applicant is identified. The primary duty 
station for the position is on the UNL campus in Lincoln, NE where the 
successful applicant will assist with administrative duties related to the 
project, including supervising technicians. The position will work in 
collaboration with Dr. Joseph Fontaine and Lindsey Messinger at UNL, Dr. 
Jeff Lusk at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and Andy Bishop at the 
Rainwater Basin Joint Venture.

Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have knowledge of species distribution 
modeling techniques, including experience developing statistical and spatial 
models using ArcGIS, R, Python, WinBUGS, or similar platforms. Preferred 
applicants will demonstrate a strong understanding of hierarchical spatial 
modeling techniques using Bayesian or frequentist statistics. Knowledge of
additional computer programming languages (C#, C++, Javascript, etc.) and 
web development are a plus. Successful applicants will be highly motivated 
with a strong work ethic, and excellent communication skills including a 
successful publication history. Applicants must be comfortable interacting 
with peers, the public, private landowners and cooperating agency staff, and 
have interest in mentoring graduate students.
