Working collaboratively with the Grand Canyon – Parashant National
Monument, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting one intern to assist with
environmental stewardship and historical preservation by spending time
working on projects such as invasives inventory, air quality monitoring and
the production of a variety of public education materials.  These projects
will assist in the creation, promotion, facilitation and improvement of the
public’s understanding of natural, historic and cultural resources
significance, as well as recreational opportunities within the Monument.
Duties and responsibilities will include:

   - Processing and analyzing data from soundscape stations;
   - Assisting with cave gate construction and ground truthing cave and
   karst;
   - (Dark Sky) Data entry into databases;
   - Testing water quality on selected springs, maintaining and deploying
   weather stations. This will include using a YSI multi-parameter water
   quality device. Entry of water quality parameters , create monthly
   precipitation models, create polygons of prior cave inventory efforts,
   create polygons of water rights in the vicinity of spring heads; and
   - Administrative duties including producing project bi-weekly and
   project completion reports, photo documentation, training, maintenance
   tasks, public outreach, youth camp assistance, etc.

*Compensation:*

   - Living Allowance: $24,200
   - AmeriCorps Education Award*: $5,645
   - Student Loan Forbearance**
   - Paid Interest Accrual**
   - Housing not provided

* AmeriCorps Education Award may be used for past, present or future
educational expenses.

*Timeline:*  Starts March 2015 or upon availability for one year



*Location:* St. George, UT. The Grand Canyon – Parashant National Monument
is located in the northwest corner of Arizona, bordering Nevada to the west
and near the southern border of Utah.


*Qualifications:*

   - Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences preferred, such as: Natural
   Resources Management, Environmental Resources, or related subject;
   - Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented;
   - Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;
   - Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety
   of forums;
   - Some college education, desirable but not required;
   - Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments;
   - Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and
   - Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or
   legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps
   Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two
   full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website
   (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) Adhere to the rules,
   regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service
   Agreement; and (5) Will not engage in any prohibited activities as listed
   in the Member Service Agreement.
