We are seeking 1 undergraduate student who has a strong background in insect
field and laboratory identifications to assist with research on the factors
affecting succession at Mount St. Helens in Washington State.

PAID SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES at MOUNT ST. HELENS!

  Motivated students may also be supported to develop a research project as
part of our NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU - see
below). Our NSF-funded field research focuses on how plant-insect
interactions can structure vegetation, animal communities, and ecosystem
properties following catastrophic disturbance. Work involves approx. 4
days/week in the field assisting with surveys of insect damage, vegetation,
and related measures.  A strong interest in entomology, plant ecology,
plant-insect interactions, or ecosystem processes is especially desirable.
Applicants should enjoy camping and working outside, be willing to assist
with camp duties, capable of hiking several miles over steep terrain with a
full backpack and engaging in light physical labor all day long. Stipend ~
$450/week. Washington State University Biology elective credit is available.
Students from under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
Dates: Mid June through Late August, with some flexibility to accommodate
course work.

WSU Vancouver's Summer REU program:

If so, the new summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program
at Washington State University Vancouver may be right for you.

We are looking for motivated undergraduate students who are interested in
gaining real-world, environmentally-oriented scientific research experience,
focused on understanding the landscapes and ecosystems in the Columbia River
Basin of the Pacific Northwest.

Program dates:  June 15 through August 14, 2015
Review of applications will begin Monday April 6, 2015.

Minimum qualifications:

Completion of one year of undergraduate study by June 2015, at a two- or
four-year institution of higher education.

Successful completion of at least one college-level science course with
lab by June 2015.

Will not receive bachelor's degree prior to August 2015.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for all undergraduate coursework.

Confirmed residence within one hours drive from the WSU Vancouver
campus for the entire nine-week summer session.

US citizen or permanent resident.
