We encourage ecologists going to Baltimore and who are studying plants (and
animals - see
below), demography, and/or comparative methods to sign up for this workshop to
take place Sat
8th August 12-5pm - http://eco.confex.com/eco/2015/webprogram/Session10696.html

Large-scale comparative analyses of demographic traits can help us ask novel
and exciting
research questions. Analyzing such “biggish data” allows us to explore
life-history evolution
across diverse taxonomic groups, study population dynamics in different biomes
and devise
conservation strategies for a changing environment. However, these analyses
require large
repositories of data on vital rates. The COMPADRE Plant Matrix Database
collates such
information in the form of matrix population models for currently over 500
plant species and over
5,600 matrix models. This database contains vital rate information for
thousands of plants and
stores this information alongside important ecological meta-data. The workshop
“COMPADRE:
The Era of Comparative Plant Demography” at the upcoming ESA conference will
present this
open-access resource and the tools for using it such that you can easily use
COMPADRE for
your research.

In addition, participants will be given a beta version of the
soon-to-be-launched COMADRE
Animal Matrix Database, which in its first version will contain ca. 400 animal
species.
