Maryland, Baltimore 21250. The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications and nominations for Department Chair. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a field that complements faculty strengths (e.g. Geography, Environmental Science, Conservation Science, Ecology, Natural Resources) and with academic achievements commensurate with appointment as a Full Professor, although senior Associate Professors will be considered as well. The candidate should have demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, a strong commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, and an active research program.

The Department has experienced rapid growth in recent years, more than doubling undergraduate majors to over 300 in our B.S. and B.A. programs, and with current enrollment of 50 M.S. students (including accelerated The department has 14 regular faculty and 9 adjunct/affiliate faculty, and has established a strong record of federal grant support (e.g., NSF, NASA, NOAA, USDA). Faculty research interests cover a range of topics in human geography and environmental science and management, including ecology and biogeography, global change science, hydrology and geomorphology, meteorology and severe storms, GIS and remote sensing, urban geography, public health, environmental history, political ecology, resource conservation, and environmental policy. Urban environmental research is particularly well-represented with the presence on campus and faculty collaboration with the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE) and the Baltimore Ecosystem Study Urban LTER. We also have strong collaborative ties with UMBC's NASA-funded Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology and the USGS MD-DE-DC Water Science Center, both located in UMBC's Research Park. Collaborations with other departments and programs on campus include Biological Sciences; Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science and Electrical Engineering; Public Policy; Gender & Women's Studies; Global Studies; Interdisciplinary Studies; and the multi-campus Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Sciences program.
