The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time,
12-month, administrative faculty position as chair of the Department of
Biological Sciences in the College of Science and Technology. The Department
of Biological Sciences currently has 31 faculty located on the Hattiesburg
and Gulf Coast Campuses with research strengths in Ecology, Evolution,
Molecular Biology, and Microbiology.  The department is home to
approximately 750 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, making it the
largest department in the College of Science and Technology. Many of the
faculty are leaders in their fields, overseeing programmatic and
transformative research initiatives supported by up to $9 million in annual
extramural funding. Faculty and students have access to modern
infrastructure including imaging and genomics facilities, natural history
collections, 3,000+ square foot wet laboratory, animal care facility, and a
300+ acre environmental research and education center. More information

collaborative opportunities with College of Science and Technology units
located on the Hattiesburg campus (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
School of Polymers and High Performance Materials, and the School of
Computing); and on the Mississippi coast (Department of Coastal Sciences and
Department of Marine Sciences)
 
Duties and Responsibilities include:

Provides leadership and direction in areas of goal-setting and assessment,
faculty recruitment, hiring, mentoring and tenure/promotion evaluation

Provides leadership and guidance to advance the research capabilities and
scholarly activities of the Department of Biological Sciences

Ensures that academic programs in the Department of Biological Sciences
maintain high standards

Directs the administration of the Department of Biological Sciences

Serves on the College Executive Committee and the College Curriculum
Committee and other university or college committees when appropriate

Oversees custody and authorized use of university property charged to the
Department of Biological Sciences and the assignment of space and facilities
to authorized activities in accordance with university policy and regulations

Performs other duties as requested by the Dean of the College of Science and
Technology and/or other administrators
