ECOLOGIST (Tenure-Track)
Department of Biology
Ursinus College
Ursinus College invites applications for a TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT
PROFESSOR beginning fall 2016. Responsibilities include teaching an
introductory ecology/evolution course, an introductory plant biology
course, the campus-wide first-year seminar (the Common Intellectual
Experience), upper level courses in the applicant's specialty, and
developing a research program involving undergraduates. Ph.D. and
post-doctoral research experience required; teaching experience preferred.
Ursinus College, located in a suburban setting 35 miles northwest of
center city Philadelphia, is a highly selective, nationally ranked,
independent, coeducational, residential liberal arts college of 1,650
students, with a long tradition of strength in science. As part of
its commitment to liberal education, all entering students
participate in a seminar course called the Common Intellectual
Experience, with readings from philosophy, science, history, and
literature. As the aim of this course is to foster an intellectual
community on campus, the successful candidate will contribute to the
teaching of this course.
The Biology Department, which supports majors in Biology,
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Environmental
Studies, is, with fourteen full-time faculty members, the largest in
the College. Faculty interests span all disciplines of biology, from
biochemistry to ecology, as part of its philosophy of offering
students a broad-based and integrative curriculum. The successful
candidate will be expected to further develop collaborations with the
Department of Environmental Studies and its faculty. The candidate
will also find opportunities to engage students, through the Center
for Science and the Common Good, in a continuing dialogue about their
responsibilities as civically-engaged scientists.
Aided by numerous grants from NSF, NIH, and HHMI, the Department and
the College provides strong support for faculty research involving
undergraduates. An example is the College-wide Summer Fellows
Program, which provides stipends, supply money, and housing for
approx. 80 students engaged in summer research projects, some funded
by the College, others by an HHMI grant to the College, as well as
NSF, USDA-NIFA, and NIH grants to individual faculty. Faculty mentors
of Summer Fellows also receive stipends.
Applicants should describe (1) their commitment to and philosophy
of undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting, and (2) a
research program that will involve undergraduate collaborators. Send
letter of application, curriculum vitae, and transcripts to
<http://apply.interfolio.com./30113>http://apply.interfolio.com./30113.
Ask three referees to submit confidential letters of recommendation
to the same interfolio address. Review of applications begins
immediately and concludes October 2, 2015.
