In cooperation with the Death Valley National Park (DEVA), the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting a Wildlife Technician to work cooperatively with National Park Staff to complete natural resource projects, including file management and data entry. These activities support natural resource management projects located throughout Death Valley National Park. Compensation: o Rate of pay: $15.34 / hour Timeline: o 140 hour appointment, beginning late September 2015 o Full time, minimum 40 hours per week Location: o Death Valley National Park is located in Nevada and California and boasts some of the hottest and driest climates, and lowest elevation in North America. A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and 3 million acres of wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone people and to plants and animals unique to the harshest desert. o Housing is available at the NPS dormitory at the rate of approximately $171/month. Qualifications: Technical requirements: o Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources, such as: Environmental Policy/Planning/Protection, Environmental Science/Studies, Natural Resources Management, or a closely related field in the biological sciences; o Familiarity and knowledge of natural resource management at Death Valley, and specifically wildlife (birds and small mammals). o Knowledge of Death Valley, ability to work in extreme and remote parts of the park. o Prior experience with small mammals and birds in Death Valley. Additional requirements: o Possess a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record; o Experience operating 4WD trucks on paved and unpaved roads, including narrow, mountain forest roads; o Ability to work independently to accomplish goals; o Ability to communicate effectively with team members, agency staff, and a diverse public; o Possess good organizational skills; o Possess a favorably adjudicated background clearance; and o Must be motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail oriented in order to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
