Tenure Track Position in Coastal and Estuarine Physical Processes
The College of Science & Engineering at San Francisco State University (SF
State) invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor
position in Coastal and Estuarine Physical Coastal Processes beginning August
2016. The position is in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences (E&CS),
but the faculty member will be expected to be an important contributor to the
research and teaching missions of the Romberg Tiburon Center (RTC) for
Environmental Studies.

E&CS & RTC seek an individual with a background in physical processes in
coastal and estuarine environments with a specialization in coastal circulation
or physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, morphodynamics or sediment transport
who use a variety of approaches including observations and modeling. The
Department of Earth & Climate Sciences
([email protected]<http://tornado.sfsu.edu/>), has 11 tenured/tenure-track
faculty and five lecturers. It offers a BS degree in Earth Sciences, with
emphases in Geology, Hydrology, and Ocean, Weather and Climate; a BA degree in
Earth Sciences; and a MS degree in Geosciences. Together, these programs enroll
about 130 undergraduate majors and 20-25 MS students. E&CS and the main campus
house an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) lab, the Electron Microscopy Facility, and
several classrooms and student spaces equipped with computers for instructional
use.

The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies
(rtc.sfsu.edu<http://rtc.sfsu.edu/>) is San Francisco State University's
interdisciplinary research center focused on marine and estuarine environments.
RTC's mission is to support experimentation, innovation and education that
enhance understanding of bays, coasts, and oceans. RTC is also home to the San
Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Smithsonian
Environmental Research Center and Taxon Biosciences, Inc. The Center is located
approximately 20 miles north of the main campus on the Tiburon Peninsula on a
34-acre waterfront parcel on the shore of San Francisco Bay. RTC facilities
include: a research center with laboratories, classrooms and administrative
offices; additional offices and classrooms in a second building; the Bay
Conference Center; the Ohrenschall Guest House, Marine/Technical Operations
Shops, and flow through and recirculating Bay/seawater facilities. RTC operates
several boats used for research including a 38' aluminum hulled vessel, the R/V
Questuary, a 21' C-Dory, and several Boston Whalers. We offer an
interdisciplinary MS degree in Marine Science based at RTC and teach a variety
of undergraduate courses from different academic departments at the Center.
Presently, 16 Ph.D. level scientists (tenured/tenure-track or research faculty)
from the departments of Biology, Geography & the Environment, Chemistry &
Biochemistry, and Physics and four postdoctoral associates lead research
efforts that involve 25 research technicians and 60 masters level graduate
students and support approximately $3 million in grant supported expenditures
annually. In addition, SF State is a consortium member of the Moss Landing
Marine Laboratories; an active participant in the California State University's
Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST); and an academic
affiliate of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Marine
and Estuarine focused institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area
provide additional avenues for collaboration.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a physical science discipline
related to Coastal and Estuarine Physical Processes. Post-doctoral experience
preferred. Candidates should have a strong background in coastal circulation or
physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, morphodynamics, or sediment transport,
using a variety of approaches including observations and modeling. Candidates
must demonstrate the ability to develop an outstanding, externally-funded
research program involving undergraduate and graduate students. The successful
candidate must have a commitment to excellence in teaching-with teaching
interests or experience in the area of coastal physical processes-and will be
expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates must
have an active record of research related to their specialty area and evidence
of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
Candidates are preferred who have teaching and/or research experience with a
large, diverse student body.

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in
the area of coastal physical processes, mentoring and advising graduate and
undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing interdisciplinary research
program, develop research collaborations with faculty at RTC and in E&CS, as
well as teaching courses in coastal physical processes and other areas that
support graduate and undergraduate education at RTC and in E&CS, and engage in
ongoing committee and service assignments. Detailed position description
