Position: One-year paid research internship in physiological plant ecology 
in the lab of Dr. Juliana Medeiros to conduct an experiment examining 
differences among Rhododendron species in leaf hydraulic conductance. This 
project is funded jointly by The Holden Arboretum Norweb Fellowship, The 
American Rhododendron Society and The Azalea Society of America.

Location: The Holden Arboretum, Kirtland, OH 

Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biology. Preference will be 
given to those with previous laboratory research experience, a demonstrated 
interest in plant physiology, and a desire to pursue a career in plant 
research. Must pass a criminal background check and substance screening. 
Travel within the US may be required as part of assigned duties. 

Benefits: Salary is $10/hour for the 12 month term plus health care 
benefits. This is an hourly, non-exempt position. On-site housing is also 
available, and housing costs will be covered by project grant funding. This 
training position will also provide career development opportunities, 
including: build networking skills by taking a lead role in interactions 
with project collaborators, advance scientific writing skills via co-
authorship on publication(s), present findings at a scientific conference 
(costs for one meeting covered by project funding), engage the public via 
research-focused outreach, participate in undergraduate mentoring, and 
receive support in the graduate school application process. At the end of 
the 12 month appointment the student may be offered the opportunity to 
continue work on future directions of the project in the Medeiros lab as a 
PhD student (pending satisfactory completion of the one-year internship and 
acceptance to Case Western Reserve University or Kent State University 
through standard application process).
