Assistant Professor of Physiology
The Department of Biology at Creighton University invites applications for a
tenure-track, assistant professorship to begin August 2016. Candidates must
have completed a Ph.D. by that date, and post-doctoral experience is preferred.
The successful applicant will teach physiology and participate in introductory
biology offerings. In addition, teaching responsibilities will include one or
more courses in the candidate's area(s) of expertise. These courses might
reflect existing offerings or areas of study not currently found in the
department. Additional teaching assignments could also include courses for
non-majors.
The primary audience for the core physiology course taught by the Biology
department is pre-health students, and as such has a strong emphasis on human
physiology. The candidate hired for this position will thus need a background
appropriate to teaching such a course. As noted above, opportunities to teach
physiology in other areas will be available. Although all areas of physiology
will be given full consideration, applicants with expertise in behavioral or
ecological/evolutionary physiology are particularly encouraged to apply.
Teaching and mentoring
Creighton's College of Arts and Sciences places a strong emphasis on
undergraduate instruction, and the successful candidates should posses a strong
desire to teach in a liberal arts environment. Mentoring of undergraduate
research students is also expected of all faculty.
Annual teaching responsibilities for faculty normally consist of 18 contact
hours, with each lecture or laboratory section counting as three hours. A
typical year might consist of teaching one lecture with two labs one semester,
and two lectures with one lab or three lectures the other semester. Course
releases are provided during a faculty member's first semester and at the
mid-tenure point. Undergraduate teaching assistants may be used to provide
support for laboratory sections. Summer courses may be offered and provide
additional compensation.
A number of department members are also part of the College's interdisciplinary
Environmental Science
Program<http://www.creighton.edu/ccas/environmentalscience/index.php>, which
also includes faculty from Chemistry, Physics, Political Science, Sociology,
and other departments. Association with the program provides additional
opportunities to mentor and teach Environmental Science majors. In addition,
the new Neuroscience
major<http://catalog.creighton.edu/undergraduate/arts-sciences/neuroscience/>
may be of interest to some applicants.
Research
Tenure and advancement require the development of a research program that leads
to peer-reviewed publications. Faculty members are provided with a research
laboratory as well as startup funds to intitate this program. In addition to
faculty within the department, opportunities exist for research collaboration
with members of other departments and programs within the College of Arts and
Sciences<http://puffin.creighton.edu/ccas/Departments.htm>, including
biochemists in the Department of Chemistry<http://chemistry.creighton.edu/> and
biophysicists in the Department of Physics<http://physicsweb.creighton.edu/>.
Other potential collaborators are located in Creighton's School of
Medicine<http://medicine.creighton.edu/> (including the Department of
Biomedical
Sciences<http://medschool.creighton.edu/medicine/departments/biomedicalsciences/index.php>,
 and Medical Microbiology and
Immunology<http://medschool.creighton.edu/mmi/index.php>) and other health
sciences
schools<http://medschool.creighton.edu/medicine/departments/index.php>, and at
other research institutions in Omaha such as UNMC<http://www.unmc.edu/>, UN
Omaha<http://www.unomaha.edu/biology/>, and the Henry Doorly
Zoo<http://www.omahazoo.com/index.php?p=conservation>.
