Dear colleagues,
We would like to invite abstract submissions to ICRS Session 46, Trait-based approaches in coral reef ecology: from functional ecology to management. Session description: The use of trait-based approaches is gaining increasing attention in coral reef ecology. While the characterization of individual traits, such as herbivory in reef fishes, has a relatively long tradition, more recent multi-dimensional methods allow for more holistic and refined examination of functional diversity facets yielding novel insights into the links between environment and the organization of species assemblages. Multi-dimensional approaches to the functional composition of reef communities appear to be better indicators of environmental impacts than taxonomic descriptors. Furthermore, functional indices have shown relation to system resilience. Since functional diversity is also largely involved in the provision of services to humans, trait-based approaches not only have the potential to generate new insights into community organization and impacts of stressors, and to develop predictive models, but also provide new tools for the management of natural resources that balance assemblage sensitivities with services provision. This session strives to bring together the various new developments in trait-based approaches, from novel characterizations of traits, methodological innovations, and the systematic collection of information on traits, to local ecological knowledge on traits, trait-based modelling, and ecosystem management. Potential topics include: functional diversity, functional richness, databases of functional traits, community ecology, ecosystem services, trait-based management. The deadline for submission is 15 January 2016 Please follow the detailed instructions for abstract submission at: <https://www.sgmeet.com/icrs2016/submission_overview.asp> https://www.sgmeet.com/icrs2016/submission_overview.asp Session Organizers: Valeriano Parravicini, CNRS-EPHE CRIOBE, University of Perpignan, France ( <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected]) Jeremiah Plass-Johnson, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) Bremen, Germany ([email protected]; <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected]) Sébastien Villéger, UMR MARBEC, University of Montpellier, France ( <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected]) Sonia Bejarano, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) Bremen, Germany ([email protected]) Sebastian Ferse, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) Bremen, Germany ([email protected]) We are looking forward to an exciting session in Honolulu!
