Job Description:

Avian point count field technicians (2) are needed from May 9 - July 13 2016 
for a 
project studying the impacts of climate change on breeding bird distributions 
over 
the last 100 years.  Survey sites primarily occur on the federal lands of 
Nevada 
throughout the Great Basin region of the state. Duties will include: (i) 
conducting 
point counts along 2 km transects (accessed by road and/or on foot by trail); 
(ii) 
installation and removal of temporary recording equipment along survey 
transects; 
and (iii) surveying for habitat characteristics. Salary is $2167/month 
($13.54/hour). Additional information on the study can be found at

Qualifications:

Technicians must have excellent eyesight and hearing; be able to identify birds 
by 
sight and call/song; and have prior experience with standard avian point count 
methods.  In addition, applicants must be able to navigate roads with maps to 
find 
sites, maintain accurate records of each visit, and enjoy working outdoors. All 
applicants MUST have a valid driver's license and a vehicle adequate to handle 
4WD 
roads. Work-related mileage will be reimbursed at the standard federal rate.

Ideal candidates will: (i) be experienced in avian point count survey 
techniques 
and be able to identify birds of the Great Basin desert by sight and sound OR 
be 
experienced in bird identification and willing to put in additional effort to 
learn 
local bird species; (ii) be well-organized and self-motivated with a record of 
being able to conduct fieldwork independently; (iii) be able to walk long 
distances 
over rugged terrain while carrying 40 lbs or more of gear; (iv) have the 
ability to 
interface with the public when necessary; (v) be comfortable working 
independently 
and camping for up to 10 days at a time at undeveloped sites; and (vi) be able 
to 
provide their own basic camping equipment. Experience with GPS desirable but 
not 
required.
