Dear researchers, faculty, and international graduate students: My name is Eliza King, and I am a freelance editor providing editing services with a focus on scholarly journal submissions and other academic writing, especially for clients whose first language is not English. Most of my current and previous clients have been Chinese graduate students and faculty who are submitting academic papers to English-language scientific journals. I also have assisted with editing and polishing of research funding proposals, resumes, and graduate program applications, including successful grant proposal submissions. I am available to clients from any language background and location; I work digitally but welcome the opportunity to discuss the work in person, if feasible. I am open to documents in all fields, but have the most experience with geography, remote sensing, computer science, psychology, and subjects in the humanities.
I have an HBA Specialist degree in English with Distinction from the University of Toronto, and a post-graduate teaching diploma in English as a Second Language from OISE/UT, with a focus on language acquisition and pedagogical grammar. I also have completed a Major in Psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. I have lived and taught English in China (as well as teaching Chinese students in Toronto). I speak, read, and write intermediate-level Mandarin, basic Japanese, and basic French. I have also done comparative analyses and other editing of university-level textbooks for Pearson Education Canada and John Wiley & Sons (USA). Clients typically send documents and communicate with me via email, and I edit in MS Word using Track Changes to record my modifications and comments. Documents are typically returned within a 24-hour period unless they are particularly long (e.g., 40+ pages in length). I offer three levels of document editing, according to a client's expressed needs: - Basic grammatical editing: This typically involves checking for correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word use throughout a document, with removal and replacement of any awkward wording or grammatical errors. A job of this type will usually take only 2-3 hours unless the document is particularly long. - Structural editing: This typically involves a more detailed and thorough approach to editing, with a focus on aspects beyond grammar and word choice, such as document structure. Clients also will be offered general tips on how to improve their English writing skills. A job of this type may take up to 8 hours, depending on the length and complexity of the document. - In-depth structural editing: This may involve complete restructuring of a document in order to improve the style of writing and to ensure a more fluent organizational flow. Most or potentially all sections will be restructured entirely. Typically a job of this type will take 1-2 days, or up to 3 days for a particularly long or complex document. All documents and correspondence are kept strictly confidential. I am able to provide estimates of the time and cost for a project if requested. I can provide (anonymous) examples of my work, as well as references from current/previous clients. My typical charge is $30/hour, paid for by cheque, but I am open to negotiation. Please share this posting if you are aware of anyone who may appreciate the service, and thank you for reading. Eliza King [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>
