The Laboratory of Entomology of Wageningen University addresses the ecology
of insects with a focus on understanding ecological phenomena in the context
of the underlying mechanisms. This fundamental approach provides a solid
basis for solving problems that insects may cause in agriculture and for the
health of humans and their domesticated animals. The research of the
Laboratory of Entomology focusses on vertebrate-insect, insect-insect, and
plant-insect interactions. The research within these main lines is linked at
different levels of biological organisation. Our objective is to carry out
excellent science that is at the forefront and (inter)nationally
well-connected, while working in a group in Wageningen in a stimulating,
collaborative atmosphere.

Within the Laboratory of Entomology there is a vacancy for an assistant
professor in the area of Molecular Ecology of Insects. The assistant
professor will be responsible for research and teaching in this research
field. The research programme to be developed by the candidate should
preferably focus on mechanistic approaches to insects to gain understanding
of their ecological interactions and share interests with other major themes
within the Laboratory of Entomology, such as host location behaviour,
intraspecific variation, population genetics, adaptation to resources and to
biotic stresses.
The candidate is expected to develop a research programme capable of
attracting PhDs and external funding, be a stimulating teacher in courses
and in the supervision of thesis projects (PhD, MSc and BSc) and contribute
in a significant way to the international profile of the group in the field
of Entomology.
Women are explicitly asked to apply. Candidates that would be qualified for
an associate professorship are also considered.

We look for

You are an enthusiastic scientist with expertise in the field of
molecular ecology of insects, holding a PhD degree and a prolific
publication record that shows your expertise in this field, including
up-to-date molecular biological approaches and bioinformatics (e.g. analysis
of RNA-seq, microarray) and demonstrable experience with or clear vision on
the use of techniques such as e.g. FISH, RNAi, or CRISPR-Cas9.
Your profile shows that you can link ecology with underlying molecular
mechanisms and that you have experience with the use of molecular approaches
to understand ecological interactions.
You have a vision on how your research could lead to novel solutions for
improving plant, human or animal health.
You are a team player and team builder with a keen interest in
collaborative research. You have a vision on connecting a research programme
on molecular ecology of insects with other research programmes within the
Laboratory of Entomology and your role therein.
You are a motivating teacher with experience in developing and teaching
courses within the field of molecular ecology of insects.
You have demonstrated to be successful in obtaining research grants in
competitive funding schemes to fund research on molecular ecology of insects.
You are quality-oriented, have a contagious enthusiasm for fundamental
research, including experimental and theoretical aspects, with a keen
interest in the applications of the research, and are pro-active in
acquisition and internal as well as external collaboration.
You are a communicative person who connects people.
You are willing to contribute to the general tasks of the chair group
and of the university and have the aim of becoming a (personal) professor.
The following competences are important: creativity, communicating,
collaboration, coaching, team-oriented leadership, daring, persuasiveness,
vision.

We offer
A full-time position (1.0 fte) as an assistant professor. We offer you as
talented scientist a challenging career trajectory called Tenure Track. From
the position of Assistant Professor you can grow into a Professor holding a
Personal Chair. Training and coaching are provided and interdisciplinary
(international) cooperation is stimulated. You will also be given the
opportunity to build your own research line. As we will only be selecting
outstanding candidates to take part in Tenure Track, this will be a good
stepping stone to a career within Wageningen UR. We offer a temporary
contract for 38 hours per week, which, based on performance, can lead to a
permanent employment contract. Gross salary per month: from € 3400,- to €
4654,- based on full time employment and dependent on expertise and experience.

Contact and how to apply
The selection is made by a selection committee and the procedure includes
giving an oral presentation. For questions about this vacancy you can
contact professor Marcel Dicke, e-mail: [email protected].
