Marine Science Educator/Deckhand Aboard 80' Schooner SoundWaters SoundWaters, a nonprofit education organization based in Stamford, CT, is accepting applications for Marine Science Educator/Deckhand aboard the 80 Schooner SoundWaters for the 2016 sailing season.
SoundWaters, founded in 1989, is the premiere environmental education organization focused on the protection of Long Island Sound and its watershed. SoundWaters works in partnership with individuals, schools, communities, businesses, civic organizations, and other environmental and educational organizations to develop experiences that foster a sense of responsibility and encourage actions that ensure the sustainable future of the Long Island Sound ecosystem. Schooner STEM program is designed for local schools, summer camps and community organizations. The crew is responsible for delivery of 3 hour STEM programs for students ranging from 2nd grade – college and assisting in sail handling during educational programs. STEM learning stations include water quality monitoring, human impact, plankton, marine animals, and navigation. Educators deliver information in an interactive pedagogy. On weekends and throughout the summer the schooner offers public sails, and private charters, and crew members are responsible for passenger safety, sail handling, and guest relations. Throughout the season the crew engages in maintenance of SoundWaters. All crew live aboard. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: • Participating in the interdisciplinary on-board education programs, including environmental and nautical science. • Teaching small group hands-on activities at the schooner’s learning stations. • Developing new learning stations when necessary to meet group needs. • Preparing and maintaining education equipment. • Preparing the schooner for program each morning and sharing in daily chores. • Assisting with the sailing of the schooner. • Assisting with various maintenance projects throughout the season. QUALIFICATIONS: • Pursuit of degree in, degree in and/or career in science (biology, geology, chemistry, etc.), history, or other field. Some experience teaching young people preferred. • Enjoy working with people, especially children. • Strong verbal communication skills and lots of ENTHUSIASM! • Must feel comfortable in a close knit, cooperative living and working situation. • Willingness to live aboard the schooner and participate in the shipboard community. START DATE: March 14th 2016 END DATE: November 20, 2016 STIPEND: $250 per week plus room and board aboard the schooner SoundWaters.
