Our office is advertising two TERM GS-5/7 Biological Science Technician (Fish) positions to assist with the the implementation of our Lost River sucker and shortnose Sucker Assisted Rearing Program (SARP). The SARP is in its first year of implementation and fulfills a conservation measure associated with the Bureau of Reclamation's implementation of the Klamath Irrigation Project. As a Biological Science Technician (Fish), you will provide technical support and assistance to the lead biologist by collecting and rearing Lost River and shortnose suckers, which are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. This involves observing, monitoring, and recording a wide variety of basic data on water quality, habitat and rearing conditions, and number and distribution of species.
Please note this is not a hatchery position. SARP is an experimental rearing program that emphasizes the use of non-invasive techniques and methods. Job duties include: 1. Retrieve, enter, and clean data from water quality and other information management systems, and use electronic databases (Access, SQL) to enter, organize, and perform standard statistical analyses of data collected from fish rearing, field, and laboratory projects. 2. Plan and carry out daily aquatic animal husbandry duties for Lost River and shortnose suckers including fish collection; aquatic life support system design; basic construction and plumbing tasks, troubleshooting, and maintenance; fish feeding; culture of feed organisms; apply fish health principles and basic treatments, etc. 3.Assist with design and implementation of fish rearing studies and field research and monitoring, including spatiotemporal patterns of fish abundance, gear type selectivity, and other projects related to experimental semi-natural fish rearing. 4. Prepare segments of recurring data summaries and technical reports and assist in preparing technical reports and publications. 5. Work closely with personnel from Federal, State, and Tribal entities in a collaborative manner. 6. Provide work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians, volunteers, or students in gathering field data and present informational or educational programs to individuals, local organizations, and schools.
