The Chief Geologist of the Geologic Hazards and Environmental Geology Program 
plays a critical role in assessing the geologic hazards posed by earthquakes, 
volcanoes, tsunamis, abandoned mine lands, and hazardous minerals. The Chief 
Geologist is responsible for guiding and tracking progress on hazard research 
projects (either as a supervisor or principle investigator) as well as 
communicating the hazards to internal and external agencies, professional 
organizations, and the Legislature. This position serves as a technical expert, 
and is expected to participate with other agencies in educating affected groups 
about geologic hazards, preparing mitigation plans, and planning emergency 
response to geologic disasters.  Additionally, this position participates in 
the development of the Division's budget, goals, and strategic plans during 
each budget cycle.

Required Qualifications:

*Master's Degree in geology, geological sciences, geophysics, engineering 
geology, or geotechnical engineering.
*Geologist, Engineering Geologist license.
*Minimum of 5 years of documented experience involving geological hazard 
assessments.
*Documented competence to prepare assessments of geologic hazards and 
environmental geology, including but not limited to, soil liquefaction maps, 
soil site condition maps as required by the International Building Code and 
International Residential Code, photo, slope, and geologic data, as well as 
field Investigations, volcanic hazards like lahars, glacial outbursts, 
pyroclastic flows, and explosive eruptions, tsunami hazards, and hazardous 
minerals, abandoned mine lands and land subsidence.
*Documented ability to perform high-quality project management from design to 
completion.
*Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of stratigraphic, structural, 
historical, economic, and engineering geology as related to Quaternary geology 
and geologic hazards; applicable laws, regulations, and court decisions; 
geologic surveying, mapping, and recording methods; applications of geology to 
the solution of problems inherent in the work of geologic hazards and 
environmental geology assessment.
