Vegetation Technicians based in Idaho
Vegetation technicians (2-3 positions) will
collect ground reference data to support a fire
ecology research project that focuses on
vegetation sampling following wildfires in Idaho,
Oregon, and potentially Alaska. The primary
objective of the project is to quantify
vegetation composition and structure 10-15 years
after wildfires. Vegetation technicians must be
able to identify western plant species and be
familiar with vegetation survey methods.
Technicians will based at the University of Idaho
in Moscow, Idaho. Field sites are also located in
southern Idaho and placement in Boise, Idaho is
possible. The job requires travel with the field
crew to remote locations with 4×4 vehicles for up
to 10-15 days to conduct field surveys of
vegetation along transects and assess the
floristic composition and ecological setting of
plant communities across a wide range of
environments. Field crews will navigate by
vehicle and by foot to field survey areas using
GPS units and delineate their locations with the
assistance of Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) software (ESRIs ArcGIS) and digital
geospatial data. Vegetation technicians will also
enter field data into a Microsoft Excel database.
Vehicles will be provided and travel costs will
be covered. Camping and cooking equipment will
not be provided. The vegetation technicians will
work collaboratively with UI researchers and US
Forest Service employees. For further

Job Duties:
* Conducting vegetation sampling in Idaho, Oregon, and potentially Alaska
* Driving a University of Idaho vehicle
* Assisting with data management of vegetation data
* Performing additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* At least 1 year field experience with plant
species identification and taxonomy (relevant
coursework may be substituted for experience)
* Familiarity with vegetation survey methods
(point-intercept and line-intercept)
* Strong history of safe and accident free driving
* Valid drivers license
* Outstanding data organization and management skills
* Strong attention to detail
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Experience working effectively with others as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience navigating with GPS and/or map and compass
* Experience maintaining a positive attitude in challenging conditions
* Familiarity with simple operations in ArcGIS and Access
* Desire to learn
* Strong work ethic
Physical Requirements
Camping and cooking equipment will not be provided.
Must be able to carry a 35 lb backpack for 5-7 days
Willingness and ability to work in inclement weather.
