Scope of Work

The School Garden Educator is a part-time contract position that supports Maya Lin Elementary teachers and students to maximize the educational potential of the garden classroom. The Educator:

Facilitates garden science classes, incorporating environmental science and nutrition education as they relate to the garden working closely with classroom teachers to develop lessons that support classroom teaching in a range of curriculum areas (science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, etc.); . Coordinates students' hands-on experiences in the garden (planting, tending, harvesting and cooking); . Builds capacity within the school by co-teaching with classroom teachers and involving parents and working with the garden committee to maintain the garden, help coordinate volunteers and secure all needed supplies.

Job Responsibilities:

. Facilitate 3-4 garden-based education classes per day, two days each week for approx. 12 weeks in fall 2016 and 20 weeks in spring 2017; . Collaborate with the PTA Maya Lin Garden Committee to manage the school garden, plan and prepare for garden work activities; . Attend staff meetings and/or grade level meetings for collaborations and core curriculum alignment; and
. Monitor, document and report on activities.

Desired Skills and Experience:

. At least 2-3 years of facilitation or teaching experience with youth aged 5-12 (outdoor group management experience preferred);
. Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or gardening;
botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access; . Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults; . Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills;
. Ability to work independently and be flexible;
. Project management skills.

The Contractor will work from 10 to 15 hours per week, primarily on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school day and in months when school is in session. Contractor rate is $18-22 per hour.
