NYC Parks has one (1) position for a Field Manager with prior fieldwork and
supervisory experience, preferably in vegetation monitoring, to supervise
data collection and analysis. NYC Parks is planning to collect data on white
tailed deer impacts to forest vegetation as part of an effort to assess the
effects of deer on the City’s ecosystems. The Field Manager will work with
NYC Parks Ecologists using GPS units and ArcGIS to create maps and a
detailed scientific report from collected field data.
Tasks Include:
-Supervision:
• Supervise field technicians in the collection of data.
-Field Work:
• Assist in the collection vegetation data in forested areas of the
City
• Use GPS units and GIS software, input collected field data and plot
points
- Data Analysis:
• Use Excel, Access and other data analysis software to generate
reports on vegetation impacts and other variables
- Report Writing:
• Compile and edit monitoring reports
- Data Organization/Inventory/Process:
• Organize and inventory data and maintain database
• Compile and edit field maps detailing habitat type and urban
structures
Requirements:
NYC Residency is required within 90 days.
Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S. in biology, ecology, forestry, or related field
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience in field ecology, specifically monitoring in terrestrial
ecosystems
- Knowledge of northeastern plant species
- Ability to conduct research and work independently
- Ability to work under adverse conditions (heat, early/late hours,
inclement weather, muddy or wet conditions)
- Experience with GPS and GIS
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Duration: 26 weeks
Hours: 35 hrs/wk (full time)
Salary: $24/hour
