Hello Eco-Loggers!

Abstracts are still being accepted for the session “Damming Tropical Rivers:
Quantifying hydrological, ecological, and socioeconomic impacts at local to
global scales” at the 2016 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting (12-16
December 2016 in San Francisco, California). This session is co-convened by
David Kaplan at the University of Florida and Elizabeth Anderson at Florida
International University and invites submissions from a diverse group of
biophysical and socioeconomic researchers to discuss unresolved questions about
the “sustainability” of damming tropical rivers.

Session ID#: 13917
Session Description: Planned hydropower development in biologically and
socially diverse tropical river basins promises to expand renewable energy
production in a number of developing countries. While hydropower is viewed as a
“green” (low-carbon) solution for meeting growing energy demand, the coupled
hydrological, ecological, and socioeconomic impacts of widespread dam
construction are poorly quantified. Critical questions remain regarding:
cumulative impacts of multiple dams on hydrologic regime, river-floodplain
connectivity, and ecosystem services; ecohydrological impacts on local and
regional livelihoods and economies; dam-induced direct and indirect land-use
changes and their impacts on regional and global climate; tradeoffs between
avoided CO2 emissions and induced CH4 emissions from reservoir flooding; and
the potential for alternate dam design and operation to better balance energy
production, environmental protection, and socioeconomic goals. We invite
submissions from a diverse group of biophysical and socioeconomic researchers
to discuss these unresolved questions and guide future research on the
“sustainability” of damming tropical rivers.

The deadline for abstract submission is Wednesday, 3 August 2016. Abstracts can
be submitted at https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm16/preliminaryview.cgi/Session13917

Please contact me ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) or Elizabeth
Anderson ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) if we can provide any
additional information.

Thanks!
David Kaplan
