Phylogenetic and Functional Trait Analyses for Ecology in R Workshop

We are pleased to announce a "Phylogenetic and Functional Trait Analyses for
Ecology in R
Workshop" to be held at February 1-4, 2017 at the National Socio-Environmental
Synthesis Center
(SESYNC: https://www.sesync.org) in Annapolis, Maryland. The workshop will be
taught by Dr. Nate
Swenson from the University of Maryland (http://www.swensonlab.com). The course
is designed to
train early career researchers interested in using phylogenetic and/or
functional trait data in their
research. The workshop will include brief lectures by Swenson introducing
topics, but the majority of
the time will be focused on learning and applying R code for loading,
manipulating and analyzing
phylogenetic and functional trait data. Topics to be covered include:
quantifying and interpreting
phylogenetic and functional alpha and beta diversity, null model concepts and
implementation,
phylogenetic comparative methods and phylogenetically informed data imputation
and other topics
covered in Swenson's Functional and Phylogenetic Ecology in R book.
Participants are encouraged to
bring their own datasets to use and/or use example datasets provided by the
instructor.

Eligibility: Participants must be affiliated with a US-based academic
institution. Preference will be
given to applicants at the early stages of their graduate school training.
Advanced stage graduate
students and postdocs are also very welcome to apply particularly if they are
seeking to add
phylogenetic and trait analyses to their existing research programs. We are
particularly interested in
having a diverse training environment and encourage researchers from
under-represented groups to
apply.

Pre-requisites: Workshop participants should have a basic understanding of R
(i.e. have it installed on
their computers, be able to read in basic data tables, run simple commands),
but do not have to have
experience with handling phylogenetic or trait data in R or with programming
their own functions.

Application Process: Interested individuals should send an email to Swenson
([email protected]) by
December 1st, 2016. The email should have a subject line of: SESYNC Workshop
Application. The
email should contain: 1) the applicantÂ’s CV in PDF format; and 2) a
one-paragraph statement of why
they are interested in attending the workshop in PDF format. Decisions on
applications will be made
within days in order to facilitate travel arrangements.

Timing: Applications will be received by December 1, 2016 with decisions made
shortly thereafter.
Travel will be arranged in the first full week of December 2016. Participants
will travel to Annapolis on
Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The workshop will be run Feb 1-4 with participants
flying out the
afternoon or evening of Saturday the 4th.

Cost: The workshop is possible via NSF funding to Swenson and SESYNC. There
will be no cost to
participants. Travel, room and board are included for all successful
applicants.
