Work for the Forest Service Ecology Program this summer! The USDA Forest Service Sierra Cascade Ecology Program is looking for three qualified field ecologists to work in northern California for 3-6 months during the summer of 2017. Salaries range from $15.49 (GS-5) to $19.18 (GS-7) per hour, depending on experience. Government housing may be available.
JOB DESCRIPTION: We are looking for field assistants to work on a project funded by the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP #16-1-05-13) on the Plumas and Lassen National Forests. Field assistants will be resampling an extensive set of field plots that were established after a series of wildfires, which occurred between 2000 and 2008, and were subsequently reburned by a recent wildfire in 2012. Data collection will focus on plant species composition, forest stand structure, surface fuels, and fire effects. We are looking for applicants who have strong skills in plant identification and use of taxonomic keys, data collection and entry, use of GPS, topographic map and compass navigation, and operation of vehicles on rough roads. Applicants must be physically fit, willing to travel for extended periods, and willing to work under arduous field conditions. Field crews will be required to camp in remote field locations. Preference will be given to energetic, detail-oriented candidates with experience in botanical and ecological monitoring methods. These positions will be based in Quincy, California. Positions can start as early as April and usually end in September.
