The School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE; http://snre.arizona.edu/) at the University of Arizona (UA) (http://www.arizona.edu/) seeks outstanding applicants for a tenure-eligible position on coupled human-natural systems, environmental governance, and decision-making. Societies are facing unprecedented environmental challenges to their well-being due to myriad anthropogenic effects on ecosystems including the loss of biodiversity; climate change; over-exploitation of water, wildlife, and other natural resources; invasive species; and habitat fragmentation. As the state’s land-grant institution with integrated research-education-outreach programs, the successful candidate will (1) conduct research that will help us understand and anticipate the nature of these challenges; (2) contribute to collaborative decision-making processes for natural resource governance and policy that spans local to global scales, and natural to social sciences and (3) train diverse scientists, land and wildlife managers, citizens, and decision-makers to address the challenges that confront society and the ecosystems that support us.
Context: The position will be housed in SNRE, which has strong research, teaching and outreach programs in wildlife and fisheries ecology; conservation biology; ecohydrology and watershed management; rangeland ecology, restoration, and management; global change ecology and management; and arid lands research. SNRE is also host to multiple cooperators from both the federal (the USGS Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the USGS Sonoran Desert Research Station, the National Park Service Desert Southwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, the USGS Southwest Climate Science Center, the National Phenology Network) and state (Game and Fish Dept., Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Environmental Quality) agencies. Our cooperative extension personnel have strong connections to landowners throughout Arizona. Diversity of thought, background, and experience powers our culture of innovation, success, and life-changing discovery. We welcome candidates who have the academic qualifications appropriate for the appointment at the rank of associate or full professor and the ability to work effectively within a broadly diverse community of students and scholars. Research: We seek a candidate with a strong record of research and extramural funding related to environmental governance in diverse disciplines from natural to social sciences. Interdisciplinary research is a fundamental component of the University of Arizona and our School. Accordingly, we seek a candidate with an enthusiastic approach to collaborative research with colleagues within SNRE, other units in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (http://ag.arizona.edu/), the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy (http://udallcenter.arizona.edu/), the Institute of the Environment (http://www.environment.arizona.edu/), the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences (https://sbs.arizona.edu/), the James E. Rogers College of Law (https://law2.arizona.edu/) and across campus. The successful candidate is expected to produce a strong record of peer-reviewed and refereed publications in high-impact, indexed journals. Teaching: The successful applicant will contribute to undergraduate and graduate curricula. We seek an enthusiastic educator who will be responsible for developing and teaching courses that substantively contribute to our Bachelor of Science and our MS and Ph.D. degrees. The applicant is expected to advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in coursework and research and be committed to the promotion and enhancement of the diversity of our students, particularly those from backgrounds underrepresented in the discipline. Benefits: Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; state and optional retirement plans; and access to UA recreation and cultural activities (see http://hr.arizona.edu/employees-affiliates/benefits).
