Job Description
The Center for Biodiversity Outcomes (CBO) a center of the Julie Ann Wrigley
Global Institute of Sustainability at ArizonaState University, invites
applications for apostdoctoral scholars to begin in 2017.The scholars will work
with Dr. John Sabo and become part of the Earth Genome project which aims to
develop water scenario planning tools that assist private sector companies
scope and strategize corporate stewardship projects in large basins across the
world. Applicants must be within four (4) years of receipt of the terminal
degree at the timeof application. Scholars will be expectedto work on
developing land surface models to understand where green infrastructure (i.e.,
wetland restoration, riparian forest restoration, prairie strips) could impact
short term hydrologic storage. This work is funded by Levi-Strauss & Co and a
collaboration with the 501c3 non-profit, The Earth Genome
(earthgenome.org<http://earthgenome.org/>). The project goal is to help Levi
Strauss & Co develop science-based water sustainability targets relevant to
their operations in Lahore and the River Ravi catchment (part of the larger
Indus River system). Though the project will initially start in the Indus
system, the postdoc will contribute to an ASU-Earth Genome collaboration that
aims to apply cutting edge hydrologic science to develop global data support
systems for the private sector.

Fellows will contribute to the design of an API to mine stored data to create
flexible scenarios. The postdoctoral fellow’s primary responsibility is the
hydrology within a land surface model (e.g., Variable Infiltration Capacity
model) but will have extensive interactions with Levi Strauss, Earth Genome and
several other relevant ASU research units including CBO
(https://sustainability.asu.edu/biodiversityoutcomes/), Future H2O
(https://futureh2o.asu.edu/) and the Decision Theater Network
(https://dt.asu.edu/). Fellows will also receive leadership and science
communication training via CBO.

Essential Duties
Contribute to design of application programming interfaces, model, and analyze
data; disseminate results in presentations and scientific publications.

Minimum QualificationsApplicants must have completed their Ph.D. in Hydrology,
Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field by the start date of the
appointment. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate must
indicate the date the degree is expected.

Applicants must have training or experience in one or more of the following
disciplines: hydrology, civil engineering, sustainability, big data.

Evidence of ability to conduct independent research, to collaborate across
disciplines, and to publish research results.

Desired Qualifications
Demonstrates experience in one or more of the following skills: macroscale
hydrodynamic models (such as Height Above Nearest Drainage, Variable
Infiltration Capacity model, Ca-Ma-Flood); groundwater models (e.g., MODFLOW)
and connections between e.g., VIC and MODFLOW or other coupled
groundwater-surface water approaches; familiarity with demand forecasting
approaches;programming skills in all languages required for models listed above
as well as Python, Matlab and R; visualization of complex data in ArcGIS.

Statement of research accomplishments. Applicants should describe experience
and goals related to the program, highlightingstrengths of the applicant’s
experience. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their dedication to
solving sustainability problems through research and scholarship, capacity to
work effectively in interdisciplinary teams, and excellent communication
skills.Special emphasis will be placed on candidates who explain how their
research would both benefit from and advance ongoing activities in the area of
public-private partnerships to solve sustainability problems, who strongly
integrate the pursuit of knowledge about earth science and modelling with end
users outside of the ivory tower.

Curriculum Vitae or resume.

Letters of recommendation. Provide the name, phone number, address, and e-mail
address of three references.
