*POSITION SUMMARY* 
This position will provide the essential management and direction
needed to conduct a significant research and extension program
focused on critical invasive pests, mainly insects, impacting urban
landscapes and wildlands surrounding urbanized environments in
Orange County. The main focus of the program is to conduct surveys of
infestations in regional parks and associated open spaces in order to
develop management strategies that are efficacious and economically
feasible. This position will also be responsible for the coordination of
research and extension activities conducted by UC Riverside faculty and
extension specialists on pest­-related issues impacting these same
environments. 

In addition, the position will interact with local, regional, state, and
federal agencies to assist in coordinating research efforts with UC
Cooperative Extension advisors, specialists, and UC academics.
Additional issues may arise and this position will be expected to
participate significantly in the prioritization of the issues to address.

*DUTIES*
Research Project Management: Serve as the Research Project Manager for the 
surveying and management of shot-hole borer, gold-spotted oak borer, and 
yellowjackets in urban landscapes, parks, and wildlands. Prioritize and 
implement research objectives independently and in collaboration with 
advisors, specialists, and AES academics. Design timelines, approaches, 
experiment methodology and project implementation plans. Evaluate 
experimental design and approaches. Act as the project manager and 
functional expert for the research by coordinating field data collection 
and associated tasks between partnering agencies and organizations, 
specifically UC and county partners.

Data Management: Develop, compile, and maintain a database of surveyed 
landscapes and wildland pest infestations for pest of concern (PSHB, GSOB, 
etc). Utilize collected field data to develop maps and analyses, utilizing 
ArcGIS, of infested areas of the county, locations of trapping programs, 
and other environmental data collected in the field. 

Reporting/Presentation: Generate and submit reports to extramural funding 
agencies; receive feedback from partners and implement input/feedback when 
appropriate. Formulate hypotheses, and assist in developing and submitting 
research proposals for extramural funding. Prepare analysis, provide 
supporting data and prepare reports for public consumption. Attend regular 
meetings with funding agency(ies) to develop strategies and provide updates 
on progress, changes in focus, or issues delaying progress. Present results 
at public, interagency, and scientific meetings, including UC program 
planning meetings held regularly across the state.

Supervision: Supervise and providing training to full-time and part-time 
staff as well as interns, if applicable. Assign schedules and tasks to 
project staff. Supervise field data collection, data entry, insect counts, 
and general data management. Supervise the development of educational 
materials with main attention to technical content.

*JOB REQUIREMENTS*
-Advanced degree in Entomology, Plant Pathology and Biology (Masters or 
equivalent). 
-Knowledge of general insect ecology and experience with methods for 
estimating insect populations
-Knowledge and experience with insect and plant interactions.
-Experience and high level of competency in computers and computer software 
including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
-Ability to develop and implement projects independently and coordinate 
multiple people and tasks.
-Good verbal and written communications skills as well as demonstrated 
skills in field data collections and compilation.
-Detailed knowledge of computer database management software.
-Mathematical statistical skills and database experience.
-Familiarity with relational database management and experience with 
Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, GIS, and ArcGIS.
-Experience supervising multiple team members.
-Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with public/private 
agencies and groups is preferred.
