Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecology and Evolution of Tree Communities
Center for Tropical Forest Science – Forest Global Earth Observatory

Location: Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC, USA

The Center for Tropical Forest Science - Forest Global Earth Observatory
(CTFS-ForestGEO) at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute seeks a
postdoctoral fellow to join a collaborative research effort to generate and use
DNA sequence data of tree communities in large forest census plots to address
broad evolutionary, taxonomic and ecological questions. The successful
candidate will work with Dr. David Kenfack to synthesize existing DNA sequence
data and where necessary develop new DNA sequence data of tree species from
across the CTFS-ForestGEO network of plots. The candidate will use these data
to address questions on the ecology and evolution of tree communities. Projects
might include: studies of trait evolution and coexistence of hyper-diverse
genera, tests of species boundaries and cryptic species, community-level
studies of functional and phylogenetic diversity, and exploration of the links
between phylogenetic diversity and ecosystem function.

Candidates should hold a PhD in evolution, plant systematics, forest ecology or
environmental science, have strong skills in DNA sequencing and data analysis,
experience in forest ecology, strong writing skills, and demonstrated ability
to work in a team environment.

The fellowship will be based at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural
History in Washington DC and will be awarded the standard Smithsonian
postdoctoral stipend. The appointment is for two years. The starting date is
flexible; earlier start dates are preferred.

To apply, send a single PDF file containing a cover letter including a
statement of research interest, CV, contact information for three references,
and two relevant publications or manuscripts to Lauren Krizel, CTFS-ForestGEO
Program Assistant, [email protected]. Rolling review of applications will begin
February 15, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled. For further
information, contact David Kenfack ([email protected]).
