Title: Natural Resource Research Technician

Hourly Rate:  $15-$16 range
Duration: Start date April 2 2017.
        
Job Description: The Wisconsin DNR will be hiring two research 
technicians within the office of science services. These positions will 
be a part of a research team evaluating linkages between forest habitat 
quality and deer health.  Research technicians will collect data that 
will contribute to assessing the availability and quality of deer forage 
throughout Wisconsin.  Applicants will be expected to work outside in a 
wide range of weather conditions and be in good physical condition to 
handle daily hiking with gear.  Applicants will also be expected to be 
considerate and maintain positive working relationships with landowners 
when private properties are accessed.

One position will be located in Rhinelander and the other will be 
located in Madison or Dodgeville.  Extensive travel across Wisconsin 
should be expected. Independent travel in state vehicles is required so 
the successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.  Start 
and end dates for these positions are flexible.  Housing is not 
provided.

Specific duties include:
 
70% A. Field data collection. 
A1. Identification of tree saplings and seedlings by species and height 
class
A2. Identification of forest stand types
A3. Establishment of study infrastructure
A4. Interaction with private landowners

20% B. Laboratory work.  
B1. Data entry
B2. Vegetation sample preparation for nutrient analyses

10% B. Mapping 
B1. Identifying study areas and mapping within ArcMap
B2. Creating maps for sampling and navigation

Knowledge Required:  A well-qualified applicant would have interest in 
pursuing a career in the field of natural resources. 
Qualifications: Applicants should have professional experience or an 
educational background in:
•       Common forestry practices
•       Identification of tree species of Wisconsin
•       Ability to navigate using GPS, compass, and topographic maps
•       Using Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Word
•       A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a 
team
•       Possess a valid driver’s license
•       Detail oriented
Preferred Qualifications:
•       Experience with ArcGIS
•       Experience with Microsoft Access
•       Experience operating trucks, trailers, and ATV’s
