Jim Bever and Peggy Schultz at the University of Kansas are currently
hiring for a part time Assistant Researcher position to support research in
plant/soil community ecology.

Position Overview A part time lab/field research assistant position is
available to support NSF-funded research in grassland plant/soil community
ecology at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS).  The research assistant
will be responsible for supporting laboratory work and some field work
associated with greenhouse, growth chamber and field experiments in
grassland community dynamics and prairie restoration.  The projected start
date for this position is February 15, 2017.

Job Description This is a maximum of a 0.5 FTE position.  We expect the
technician to work with investigators (PI, research technician,
post-doctoral researchers and graduate students) to set up, maintain,
harvest and analyze plant ecology experiments in greenhouse, growth chamber
and field settings.  In addition, they will be expected to help maintain
our arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal collection.
50% - Identifying and sorting harvested plant material from experiments
15% - Mixing and sterilizing native soil for culture and pot experiments
10% - Collecting seed, germinating, transplanting experimental plants into
pots and in the field as well as sowing seeds directly into field
experiments
15% - Starting, checking, maintaining arbuscular mycorrhizal (microscope
work)
10% - Collecting data from pot and field experiments

Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range science
or related field.
2. At least 1 year of experience in field research, either as a field
worker, field/lab technician, or investigator.
3. Knowledge and experience in plant identification obtained through
experience or education.
4. Experience in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software
(Microsoft Office).
5. Good written communication skills as demonstrated by application
materials.

Preferred Qualifications
1.  Master’s degree or higher in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range
science or related field.
2.  Working knowledge of Midwestern and/or Great Plains flora.
3.  Experience propagating plants from seed.
4. Experience in database management.
5. Experience using a microscope and other sensitive laboratory equipment.
6. Ability and desire to do microscope work, work in greenhouse conditions
and in the field.
