Hello all,

I wanted to send out a reminder of the upcoming courses taught by OTS.

To help you imagine what these courses are like, we invite you to view the OTS

 .

Tropical Biology: An Ecological Approach 2017-3
Course dates: May 22 - July 2, 2017
Application deadline: February 20, 2017
Course Fee: $7,900 general; $2,900 OTS member institution students
Instructors: Jennifer Stynoski and Patricia Salerno plus invited professors
(USA/Latin America)

Tropical Biology: An Ecological
Approach<http://education.tropicalstudies.org/en/education/graduate-opportunities/programs/tropical-biology-an-ecological-approach.html>
is an intensive, six-week field-based experience in tropical biology for
graduate students. This classic OTS course has trained tropical ecologists and
evolutionary biologists using an active learning approach, which engages
students in a fun and fast-paced research environment. With guidance from
expert scientists, students gain experience in critical thinking, research
design, data analysis, analytical tools, science communication, ecological
modeling, and collaborative research-all in the beautiful tropical setting of
Costa Rica.

The course includes a Science Communication workshop. Participants learn to
communicate their findings to those outside the scientific community by
producing short videos<http://bit.ly/17zrgx7> maintaining a Course
Blog<http://bit.ly/1f0PrqA> and creating podcasts.

Biology of Neotropical Social Insects
Course dates: March 12 - 24, 2017
Application deadlines: February 3, 2017 (extended deadline)
Instructors: Sean O'Donnell and Floria Mora-Kepfer Uy plus invited professors
(Latin America/USA)

Biology of Neotropical Social
Insects<http://education.tropicalstudies.org/en/education/graduate-opportunities/programs/biology-of-neotropical-social-insects.html>
offers graduate students an opportunity to focus on social insect behavior,
evolution and ecology. Based at Las Cruces and La Selva research stations in
Costa Rica, this 2-week course explores the various roles of social insects as
major ecological players in terrestrial ecosystems, functioning as
detritovores, herbivores, predators, pollinators and ecosystem engineers.
Diurnal and nocturnal fieldwork will be enhanced by discussions on an array of
topics including social evolution, species richness, subterranean faunas,
sampling methods, behavioral observations and symbiotic associations.

OTS also has additional funds available for partial need-based scholarships.
Applicants will be notified of their admission about 3 weeks after each
application deadline.
