Applications are invited for the position of STEM Outreach Education Coordinator with the Salish Sea Research Center at Northwest Indian College. Position is open until closed, initial screening will begin March 8th, 2017.
The position is primarily responsible for maintain the education outreach vision of the Salish Sea Research Center (SSRC) as a renowned research center that promotes development of NWIC students as Indigenous scholars, and provides STEM outreach and educational opportunities to K-16 students within the community. The SSRC is a 4,200 sqft research center with a variety of equipment and instruments. The SSRC was developed to increase the presence and influence of Native American leadership in the arena of geosciences and natural resource management. Solutions to environmental degradation require attention to both science and culture. More Native Americans need the education and training necessary to carry out these responsibilities. Specifically, the SSRC is charged with increasing the number of Native Americans with science backgrounds in leadership roles that serve their communities. The candidate may work in multiple areas of science education, outreach, and communications. These include: online content; multimedia and immersive experiences; exhibits and displays; STEM experiences for youth and adults; public events; professional learning experiences for faculty; partnership building within the community; engagement of audiences traditionally underserved/underrepresented in STEM; and involvement of Native scientists in education and outreach. Time spent is flexible, based on grant requirements, but would roughly be: 40% community K - 12 STEM education outreach, 25% curriculum development, 25% NWIC student internship involvement in STEM, 10% administrative and grant documentation. Duties and Responsibilities include: Developing, coordinating, and teaching age and culturally appropriate STEM activities to K-16 students; Facilitate NWIC student engagement within the community; Work effectively with school districts, community organizations, government agencies, parents, students, and/or staff; Create education opportunities for students through outreach to community and business resources; Travel to local communities for STEM outreach events, Conducting summer K-12 STEM camps; Be responsible for development and management of the budget for outreach activities; Maintain documentation for grant reporting; Maintain the SSRC’s online presence through website and/or social media; Other duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in STEM field with experience in outreach programs or education; Experience teaching/volunteering in STEM topics; Experieince working with K-16 students; Ability to communicate effitively both verbally and in writing. Preferred qualifications: Experience working with Tribal organizations on environmental issues; Experience working in Native American communities; Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Bilogy, Ecology, Fisheries, Environmental Science or a related degree; WEbsite/video/technology skills Work evnivornment: The work environment for this position is an office, laboratory, classrooms, and outdoors. The work is primarily indoors, but outdoor education could involve collecting water samples in streams, rivers, lakes or marine environments, doing plant surveys, or collecting soil samples in a forest or other outdoor environment, as well as tide walk surveys. Outdoor work could involve exposure to moderate levels of heat cold, and humidity or rain. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
